Tips for Loosening Up

Tips for loosening up

The Abstract Phase of this Painting

  1. Simplification is the key …Paint in the abstract phase without adding detail for as long as you can
  2. Remember the mood and the focal point are the emphasis, other
    things are left abstract
  3. Squint and compare everything! Squinting simplifies things naturally.
  4. Paint beyond the lines, we are not doing a coloring book.
  5. Paint with a big brush, cover broad passages simply.
  6. Paint using your full arm and the full length of the handle, we are not writing.
  7. Step back often, make sure your painting reads at a distance so it must be simple.

The Heart of a Painting – the Heart of the Artist

Where is the heart of a painting? What is its soul? Without this foundation of depth it is clamour, noise and surface beauty that can not quench desire and hope. Can all this really exist within an object such as a painting or is it revealed in the heart of the artist who strives to journey along the path to try to translate this message?

John O-Donohue, in his book The Invisible Embrace of Beauty, writes with the heart of a true artist always seeking to journey along the pathway to find the soul in what he is seeing and saying and doing.  He writes” I love the imagination of light: How gradually light will build a mood for the eye to discover something new in a familiar mountain. This glimpse serves to deepen the presence of the mountain and remind the eye that surface can be subtle and surprising.  Light never shows the same mountain twice. Only the blindness of habit convinces us that we continue to live in the same place, that we see the same landscapes. In truth, no place ever remains the same because light has no mind for repetition; it adores difference. Through its illuminations, it strives to suggest the silent depths that hide in the dark.”

The challenge for us is to awaken fresh from our habitual blindness, to journey deep discovering the a new territory presented to us, to find the fresh beauty within and undertake the journey which is held in the challenge to translate the message given to us as seen through our soul.
